About Appellation Central Wine Tours
Appellation Central Wine Tours was founded by Philip Green and Wendy Johnston, two New Zealanders with a passion for Central Otago and its wines, and a desire to share that enthusiasm with others.
Having lived overseas for many years, Philip and Wendy moved to Queenstown in the late nineties. Queenstown offered the small-town atmosphere, cultural diversity, wines and vineyards, and the great outdoors that both loved so much, and was the perfect location for a wine tourism business.
Both Philip, an IT executive, and Wendy, a project manager, made major career shifts when they created Central Otago Wine Tours in 1999. Philip began the transition while they were still in the UK by studying for a Diploma of Wine and managing a specialist UK wine outlet. This, together with his love and knowledge of Central Otago wines, makes Philip one of the country’s most qualified wine guides.
Central Otago Wine Tours’ mission was to take people far from Queenstown’s adrenalin attractions to the quieter parts of the region. There they immersed their guests in the culture of fine wine, good food and beautiful open spaces, a side of Queenstown that people often miss on a short visit.
In 2005 the company undertook an extensive brand review and changed the trading name to Appellation Central Wine Tours, reflecting the development and recognition of the Central Otago wine region and the growing popularity of their Queenstown-based wine tours.
The greatest acknowledgement of their success and quality of touring experiences came between 2011 and 2013 when Appellation Central won trophies in the Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism awards. Appellation Central was the New Zealand Wine Tourism Services winner in 2011 and 2013 and in 2012 the International winner.
